Background and Goals: Imagine a future where human environments respond to human preferences and needs. In this world, devices equipped with simple intelligence and the abilities to sense, communicate, and act will be unremarkable features of our world. We will expect the car to warn us of hazards, track our location and provide timely route advice. We will speak to simple machines and hold conversations with more complex systems, such as intelligent homes that will help us monitor conditions, track routine tasks, and program the behaviour of the heat, the lights, the garden watering and the entertainment centre. Analogous systems at work will make simple decisions in our stead ranging from scheduling meetings to negotiating for common services over the web. Such systems will also acquire, and adapt to our preferences over time. In sum, we will come to view simple software intelligence as an ambient feature of our environment. The infrastructure for ambient intelligence is fast coming on line. Computational resources are cheap and becoming cheaper, while ubiquitous network access has started to appear. Market forces will soon produce applications. We take the view that ambient intelligence is imminent and inevitable, and that the time is ripe to take stock. This workshop will provide that opportunity by gathering researchers in a variety of AI subfields together with representatives of commercial interests to explore the technology and applications for ambient intelligence.

Areas of interest: include, but are not limited to the following:

This workshop will complement previous events, such as the International Conference on Smart Homes and Telecare, the AAAI 2005 Spring Symposium Workshop on Persistent Assistants and the European Symposium on Ambient Intelligence. This workshop differs in that it will focus on the special relevance of AI technology to the goals of Ambient Intelligence, and on the most likely avenues for practical application. AITAmI'06 will provide an open forum based on a variety of presentations: research papers, keynotes, panels and industrial demos.

Submission Details: Authors wishing to participate as speakers in this event should submit papers following the same formatting guidelines than for the main conference. More details on how to submit papers to this Workshop will be provided later.

May 10: notification of evaluation
May 24: camera ready submission

General Structure of the Event: The core of the event will be the presentation of recent advances in research and applications followed by a debate aiming to encourage a critical reflection on the subject. The event will be opened with a keynote speech, followed by sessions where papers will be presented to report on significant theoretical developments and applications. Presentations can also contain demos about tools and applications. After the presentations of papers reporting advances on research and applications a panel will focus on various topics of interest at both academic and professional level. Interaction will be encouraged throughout the event.

Submission procedure: Papers should be written specifically for this Workshop and should address at least one of its general focus points. Research papers, position papers, and demos are equally welcome.

Authors should format their papers according to the ECAI'06 submission guidelines (including length), which are described in this PDF document. LaTex users can find the style files in this zip file.

Please send a PDF version of the paper via email to jc.augusto 'at' ulster.ac.uk. The body of the message should include the paper title, author name(s) and affiliation(s), abstract of the paper, category of the presentation (research paper?, position paper? demo?) and at least three areas of interest (in order of importance) from the CFP related to your work. All categories of papers (research paper, position paper or demo) are subject to the same formatting guidelines (including the same maximum lenght of 5 pages) and the same deadlines (see further down).

It is convenient that if the presentation requires any equipment different from the standard notebook and data projector the authors of the paper communicate this to the workshop chairs as soon as possible.

Publications: papers will be compiled in the Proceedings of the event. Computational Intelligence (Blackwell Publishing) will also publish a selection of best papers as a Special Issue edited by Dr. Paolo Remagnino.

Review: all of the papers submitted to this Workshop will be reviewed by an expert Programme Committee, who will be assessing their relevance to the workshop, quality of research and/or potential impact. The organizers of this event will then invite the authors of some selected papers to present their research at the Workshop.

Attendance: at least one author of each accepted paper is required to attend the workshop to present the paper. In addition to the invited speakers and panellists, it is in the spirit of the event to encourage active audience participation through questions and debate. Those wishing to attend the workshop without presenting a paper are invited to send a brief statement of interest and a description of their previous or future work in this area.

Registration: please note that all participants must register for the conference AND the workshop.

A small number of grants will be offered to waive registration fees. Prospective atendees wanting to qualify for these grants should send an email to the co-chairs justifying her/his request. Ph.D. students having an accepted paper in the workshop and providing suitable evidence by email of enrolment in an appropriate postgraduate program will be given priority.
