Edited by Martin Fitzpatrick, Stranmillis College, and Ken Houston, University of Ulster.
By the time this edition of Hypotenuse is published, it is expected that a new internet resource -- The Northern Ireland Mathematics Forum -- will have come into existence. This will be published in Northern Ireland on one of the University of Ulster’s servers and, while it will have a unique Northern Ireland flavour, it will be on the World Wide Web and so will be universally available. It is intended that mathematics teachers in Northern Ireland will be encouraged to publish their ideas and resources on it (at the discretion of the editors).
To start with, the NIMF will carry the resource pack produced by the Supercalculators Through the Curriculum Project. This is also being distributed in hard copy to every post-primary school in Northern Ireland, thanks to a grant from CCEA (whose financial support and moral encouragement for the whole project are gratefully acknowledged). This will contain worksheets, case studies, and other materials that pupils and teachers can use when teaching with, or using, graphics calculators. Many of the resources refer to the TI-82, but some refer to the Casio 7700g and the TI-85. This resource pack has been written and trialled by the Northern Ireland teachers who were involved with the project. It is intended that new users who develop their own resources could contribute them to this collection.
Then it is also intended to publish Hypotenuse on the NIMF, starting with this edition, and again, the editor of Hypotenuse , Brian Greer (School of Psychology, QUB) encourages contributions from teachers and others. His e-mail address is b.greer@qub.ac.uk
From time to time, other articles and announcements will be added, such as, for example, details of the annual conference for mathematics teachers. The date planned for 1997 is Saturday 15th November.
The URL of the NIMF is http://www.infj.ulst.ac.uk/NI-Maths/
(This is the Faculty of Informatics server at Jordanstown [infj] in
the University of Ulster [ulst], in the Academic Community [ac] in the
United Kingdom [uk].)
If you want to receive an e-mail announcement of the opening and updating of this web site, please send a message to Ken Houston (sk.houston@ulst.ac.uk), saying a little about yourself. He will maintain a mailing list of interested mathematics teachers in the province.
