I apologize for the long gap since the last appearance of Hypotenuse, the result of a combination of personal circumstances which made it impossible for me to find the time available to assemble and edit the material.
The Mathematics Panel of the Northern Ireland Educational Support Unit produces Hypotenuse on a shoestring with a considerable voluntary investment of time and work, and makes it available to all secondary level schools at no cost. We intend to continue to provide this service, and to enhance it by making Hypotenuse in future available electronically as part of The Northern Ireland Mathematics Forum. As more schools acquire access, we hope this facility will stimulate the interchange of ideas, materials, experience, and opinions.
The Northern Ireland Mathematics Forum is being organised by Martin Fitzpatrick (Stranmillis College) and Ken Houston (University of Ulster). In case you haven’t heard, since the last issue of Hypotenuse, Ken’s outstanding contribution to mathematics education both locally and internationally has been fittingly, if belatedly, recognised by a professorship.
The Mathematics Panel of NIESU also organises an annual conference, the last being held in November last. Reports of the two talks given, by Douglas Butler and Ken Houston, are included in this issue (Technology for Secondary Mathematics and Mathematical Modelling at A Level, respectively). Plans are already advanced for the 1997 Conference -- see Notes for your Diary.

This Journal aims to provide interesting and stimulating material of value to Northern Ireland teachers of mathematics. The editorial committee will consider for publication any article that will enhance the teaching of mathematics in schools. In particular, the editor welcomes correspondence from teachers indicating matters they would like to see addressed in this Journal.
