Data Resource: The One World Centre for Northern Ireland

The One World Centre was founded in 1986 and is funded by Oxfam, Christian Aid, UNICEF UK, Concern Worldwide, Save the Children Fund, Trocaire, UNESCO, and War on Want. It provides educational resources and organises many activities relating to development education, a process that aims to raise questions about, and draw connections between, aspects of development in all countries of the world.

Material produced or assembled by the centre represents a valuable resource for teaching subjects including social studies, history, geography, science and mathematics, and cross-curricular themes such as Education for Mutual Understanding, and Economic Awareness. It houses a reference source of press clippings organised by topics, books and periodicals, a video lending library, and a wide range of educational materials, including teaching packs, simulation games and activities, teacher and pupil textbooks, classroom practice manuals, and photo and video packs. Thus, the centre represents a valuable source of information that could be used for the teaching of data handling using authentic data, demonstrating the relevance of mathematics to issues that concern and engage young people. A lengthy resource list for Key Stages 3 and 4 is available. Access to the library facilities is available for £ 10 per annum (£ 5 if you are a student or unwaged).

Among the centre’s own publications is Primary Issues: Northern Ireland and India. While this is primarily intended as a resource for teaching Geography and English, it could profitably be integrated with data handling through quantitative analysis of the topics raised.

Another top-class publication, containing a mass of data, that is available from the centre is 75/25: Ireland in an Increasingly Unequal World, published by Dochas, the Irish Assembly of Non-Governmental Development Organisations (3rd Edition, 1996).
