11 30 Using the Internet
Dr Paul Hanna, p.hanna@ulst.ac.uk, University of Ulster.
The presentation will give a non-technical overview of the Internet, the structure of the Internet and a conceptual view of its operation will be explained. It is hoped to include a live demonstration of the world-wide web (WWW or simply ‘web’) to illustrate the range of mathematical and other resources which are available. The use of a ‘search engine’ to assist the process of finding information will be demonstrated. Web sites from a number of schools in Northern Ireland will be examined, offering the audience the opportunity to see and hence learn from the work of others. The simple technology required to create your own web pages will then be outlined. Possible uses of the Internet within teaching will be discussed and an opportunity to ask questions will be provided.
Dr. Paul Hanna is a lecturer in Computing Science at the University of Ulster. He is currently the Secretary of the Belfast Branch of the British Computing Society (BCS) and also represents BCS on the Northern Ireland Growth Challenge. In this role, he has responsibility for organising the ‘IT’s Our School’ competitions which are open to all schools in Northern Ireland.
