A-Level: Circle - Parametric Form

Casio fx-7700

1. First ensure that the calculator is set to the correct graph type. Press [MENU] select COMP, now press [EXE]. Press [SHIFT] [SETUP] [F3]. The graph type should now be set to PRM. Press [EXIT].

2. Now press [RANGE] and set it as follows.

Once the range has been set press [EXIT].

3. Press [SHIFT] [F5] [EXE] this clears the graphics display. Now press [SHIFT] [DRG] [F2] [EXE] to set the angle mode to radians.

4. You can now enter the parametric equation as follows.

[GRAPH] [2] [cos] [X,,T] [SHIFT] [ , ] [2] [sin]
[X,,T] [ ) ] [EXE]

The following graph will be displayed.

Why does it look like an ellipse?

5. Pressing [RANGE] [F1] [EXIT] [EXE] will correct this.

6. Draw each of the following curves on your calculator and sketch a copy in your exercise book. Note carefully the number of revolutions made.

(a)x = 2cos(T/2),y = 2sin(T/2)

(b)x = 2cos(3T),y = 2sin(3T)

(c)x = 2cos(3T/4),y = 2sin(3T/4)

(d)x = -2 + cos(T),y = 3sin(T)

(e)x = 3 - 2cos(T),y = 1 + 2sin(T)

(f)x = 2(cos(T))2,y = 2(sin(T))2

(g)x = 3cos(T),y = 2sin(T)

7. Investigate further examples of your own choosing.
